The Battle for China’s Past: Mao and the Cultural Revolution
Members and friends are invited to a talk by Prof. Mobo Gao on his new book The Battle for China ’s Past.
The book explores why Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution have been attacked in China and the West, and critically analyses Chang and Halliday’s Mao: The Unknown Story and Li Zhisui’s The Private Life of Chairman Mao.
It also discusses the use of the internet as a means of enabling Chinese socialists to reaffirm the contributions and the general line advocated by Mao Zedong.
A “gold coin” donation will be requested for the ACFS.
2007 Australia Day BBQ January 25th saw the ACFS hold its inaugural 'Australia
Day' (eve) BBQ in Rymill Park in the city. Aimed at involving overseas
Chinese students and ACFS members in Australia Day celebrations, the
evening saw a mix of Aussies and Chinese come together for a traditional
Australian BBQ followed by a friendly game of soccer in the parklands. For
some of our newer members this was their first Aussie BBQ, and some were
even treated to their first taste of Vegemite, to really get into the
Aussie spirit!
ACFS Questions Section 457 Visas A number of questions have arisen about the use of Section 457 Visas. These allow the recruitment of skilled overseas workers into areas of skills shortage in the Australian labour market. Earlier this year, Executive members undertook to write to their local Federal MP to seek clarification on the use of Chinese workers employed on Section 457 visas. See SA President Mike Williss' letter to Alexander Downer here: Letter to Alexander Downer. ACFSSA.ORG.AU - Your source for information on China... The ACFSSA Website will soon feature information on China for our members and friends. Geographical, cultural and much more information will be included, enabling visitors to gain a greater understanding of China and its people. The new pages will also feature an archive of fascinating articles on China, written by both members and others. So keep an eye out for our latest update to this website by clicking the 'China' link above. December: Christmas Celebration Charity Luncheon - A Huge Success! Over a deliciously fresh and light Chinese lunch at the House of Chow in Adelaide, Josephine Charles [Charles Foundation for Children in Need] and Sue Nicholls [Vice Pres. ACFS(SA)] gave a power point photo presentation of their combined efforts in the Liangshan Autonomous region of Sichuan in far western China. Jo and Sue took us through two colourful years of determined effort, strong work and vision that has changed their lives of some very needy children in remote rural China. Monies raised from the luncheon tickets and raffles have provided sufficient fund to provide 3 grandmothers of orphans at Yellow Grass Village their wish of owning a pig, a rooster, some chickens and pens to safely house the animals. Heartfelt thanks go to the always generous ACFS executive member Pat O'Riley from the Balcony Hotel at Murray Bridge for her donation of accommodation packages for the raffle. Thanks also go to Tim Shaw, glass artist from Aldgate for his exquisite amber glass 'art deco' inspired platter also raffles at the luncheon. Thankyou too, to all those members and friends who supported this very pleasant function. Please go to our photo gallery for more photos from this event...
ACFS National Website Wins Award The ACFS website presents the face of the Australia China Friendship Society in the international arena, as well as nationally, and provides information about our mission, activities and members. You are urged to visit it soon and see why it was judged worthy to exhibit the Golden Web image.
Charles Foundation News The Charles Foundation, through the support of it’s donors including the Australia China Friendship Society of South Australia, have completed the construction of a new, solid brick school at Huo Pu Village. The village is located at the end of a rough, dirt track, a 15 minute drive from the larger village of Jue Fang Go in the Lingshan Autonomous Region of Sichuan. At an elevation of 3,500 metres, it is often inaccessible during the winter owing to deep snowfall, and in the summer, heavy rain causes landslides closing the road for days at a time. The school has accommodation for two teachers and the concreted playground has a high wall to keep the children safe. The whole community is thrilled with their new school. The children can now look forward to days spent in well ventilated, light classrooms with comfortable new desks and chairs. To see and read about this exciting project and what it has achieved, visit the Charles Foundation website, at http://www.charlesfoundation.org/g.
